Breast enlargement surgery, also called breast augmentation or augmentation mammaplasty, is not without potential risks and complications, just like any other surgical procedure. Florida cosmetic surgeon Dr. Brian Joseph and the entire staff at Park Avenue Plastic Surgery wants every patient to be fully aware of these possibilities before making the decision to increase her breast size.

Implant Rupture

Both saline and silicone implants have the potential to rupture and leak the fluids back into the body. Some causes of rupture include:

  • Trauma
  • Pressure or compression
  • Capsular contracture
  • Puncture during medical procedures
  • Aging of the implants
  • Saline implant overfilling or underfilling
  • Overhandling of the implant prior to placement in the body

Saline implant ruptures are normally immediately apparent. Because the saline or saltwater solution can be easily absorbed in the body, these types of implant ruptures can deflate the breast implant very quickly.

Silicone implant ruptures can be less apparent because the body does not absorb the silicone gel filling. Patients may have other symptoms that accompany the rupture, such as:

  • Knots in the breast
  • Irregular appearance
  • Pain
  • Tingling or burning
  • Swelling
  • Numbness

Capsular Contracture

It is perfectly normal for scar tissue (also called a capsule) to form around breast implants after they are inserted into the chest area. In some women, this scar tissue can begin to tighten and squeeze one or both implants. This can occur at any time during the life of the implants, but it does not happen to every woman. There are also varying grades of capsular contracture:

  • Grade I: The breast(s) may appear outwardly normal
  • Grade II: The breast(s) may still appear normal but feel slightly firm
  • Grade III: The breast(s) become firmer and take on an abnormal appearance
  • Grade IV: The breast(s) are very hard, painful and appear irregular

Other Risks</>

Other risks of breast augmentation can include:

  • Rippling or wrinkling
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Asymmetry
  • Dissatisfaction with the outcome
  • Breast sensation changes
  • Scarring

When this procedure is performed by a knowledgeable, qualified surgeon like Dr. Joseph, and all necessary precautions and recommendations have been properly followed, breast augmentation can be a very safe and effective alternative for women who want larger breasts.
