Breast cancer kills. Second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of death among women in America, breast cancer does not have to be deadly. When it is caught early through routine mammograms, your chance of survival is significantly increased.
Orlando plastic surgeon Dr. Brian Joseph is a compassionate, dedicated plastic surgeon who understands patient apprehension. Before your breast augmentation surgery, he will discuss your breast enhancement goals and will address any concerns you have. He cares not only about your satisfaction but about you as a patient, as well.
Annual Mammograms
Annual mammograms are recommended for women age 40 and older. However, if you have breast implants, it is recommended that you begin yearly mammograms at age 35. Statistics reveal that one in eight women will develop breast cancer and one in 33 will die from it.
If you have breast implants, you should follow the same at-home prevention guidelines for self-breast exams. People with implants say it is actually easier to feel a lump against the smooth round surface of the breast implant.
Implants Make Mammograms More Difficult
It is true that mammograms are more difficult for patients with breast implants. However, a radiologist who is experienced at reading mammograms of breast implant patients can ensure a successful screening.
Breast implants make mammograms more difficult because:
- Scar tissue capsule around the implant can get calcium deposits, which can make interpretation difficult
- Additional shots are required for the procedure
- The results take longer to read
If you have implants, you will be asked to undergo additional views of your breasts during your mammogram. Because this screening requires your breasts to be compressed, there is a chance that your implants may rupture. However, the benefits of mammogram in the early detection of breast cancer outweigh this risk.
Tips for a Successful Mammogram
If you have breast implants, there are several things you can do to make your reading as accurate as possible:
- Find a facility that sees many women with breast implants. Ask your physician or Orlando plastic surgeon Dr. Brian Joseph for a referral to a where the radiologists are experienced in reading mammograms of breast implant patients.
- Speak up about your breast implants during your screening. Reveal that you have breast implants when you are scheduling your appointment, and again just before your procedure. This will ensure that the staff and radiologist know what to look for.
